We have a dynamic External Communications Specialist opportunity for someone who has strong writing skills and who cares deeply about alleviating hunger in our community. This position will support the development and communications efforts for an innovative hunger relief organization that feeds thousands of our neighbors each month and is actively redefining what it means to fight suburban hunger. Through a focus on fresh and healthy food, and a dedication to making access to food both dignified and convenient, The Open Door has a remarkable story to tell.

- Possess excellent communications skills, be highly organized, and have familiarity with nonprofit communications trends. Your duties will be diverse and multi-faceted, therefore excellent professional skills are vital for this role.
This position will help support all organizational communications channels with a focus on external communication, create promotional materials and work with our team to deliver our organization’s message to our donors, volunteers, supporters and the public.
The External Communications Specialist is responsible for maintaining and executing communications plans and programs in support of The Open Door’s Communications strategy and overall mission. The position is responsible for supporting the development and communications team across various initiatives and projects; building strong relationships with stakeholders; and assisting in developing multi-channel, compelling strategies, tactics, and deliverables to inform, engage and align stakeholders to The Open Door’s strategies and objectives.
Primary Duties & Essential Responsibilities
- Work with Director of Development and Communications and Communications and Events Coordinator to create and distribute written content for annual reports, press releases, social media platforms, targeted email communications, flyers and other content.
- Write content for both print and Web including the website, printed materials, and newsletter.
- In collaboration with Director of Development and Communications and Communications and Events Coordinator, compose feature pieces on clients, volunteers, board, committees and staff.
- Build community through external facing communication.
Additional Duties:
• Responsible for writing, publishing and distributing external communications, as needed
• Proofreading and editing of documents
• Composing communications for external distribution
• Managing distribution, to include:
• Preparing external communications and managing distribution lists
• Posting content to website, social media and other platforms
• Compiling and evaluating reports on content performance
• Develop external communications strategies, tactics and deliverables to engage, motivate and align constituents with TOD’s mission and programs. Will be support to development and communications team.
• Collaborate with counterparts on the development and communications team and in other functional areas to ensure that communications are planned and integrated across the organization.
• Coordinate the logistics of external communications campaigns to ensure that all communications and materials are delivered on time and through the proper channels.
• Post and deliver content through The Open Door’s external communications platforms, such as Mail Chimp, social media platforms and website.
• Assist in managing the content on various external sites.
Tasks include:
• Writing and proofreading content; uploading new documents; updating content and hyperlinks and updating various properties to reflect status or categorization/meta tagging
• Monitoring and measuring content to determine effectiveness
• Developing and maintaining the ongoing documentation of metrics
• Work closely with development and communications team to effectively communicate to constituents. Play a key support role in the development and implementation of marketing and fundraising campaigns.
• Assist with the coordination of special presentations and projects, such as: PowerPoint or other materials; create talking points, Q&A; announcements; and recording video.
• Provide assistance to other projects.
• Strongly preferred: B.S. or B.A. in Communications, English, Journalism or Marketing
Technical/Soft Skills Requires:
• Advanced Microsoft Office and social media skills required
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to adapt writing style to the intended audience(s)
• Proven track record of exercising sound judgment in communicating with various internal and external audiences
• Ability to operate with a sense of urgency
Experience Requires:
• 1-3 years of professional writing and communications
• experience working with business teams to develop communications that help achieve desired results
• Effective presentation and communication skills
• Ability to learn new subject areas quickly

Work Schedule
External Communications Specialist position is a 25 hour-per-week paid position. This position offers a flexible work schedule including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
This position will report to the Director of Development and Communications.
Salary: $21.00 / hour
